As winter sports have officially wrapped up, we want to highlight the successful seasons of boys varsity soccer, boys varsity basketball, and girls varsity basketball.
Albany High boys basketball had an impressive season, finishing with a 22-10 record and making it all the way to the NCS semi-finals. The Cougars’ season was a success, going deeper into the playoffs than they have gone in over a decade.
When asked why this basketball season was so special, Itai Weinberg, senior, says, “I think we all had the same passion, and I just think going further than we all expected. Also being the underdogs this entire year because of losing eight seniors.”
Trying to follow up such an impressive season may be difficult, Cody Zimmerman, junior, says, “We are a competitive team, and we will play with the same heart we did this season. Another hope that I have is that we have the same camaraderie that we did this season. We had a lot of good team chemistry, and it was just a very fun season to be a part of.”
Eight seniors from their team this season, four of whom are starters, leaving a noticeable gap in the team. When asking Adonias Soloman, junior, how difficult it is going to be to replace the graduating seniors he responds, “That’ll be a tough process cause they’re really good players, and they put in a lot of time and effort, but I think the coaches and the staff have left us a pretty good blueprint on how to come in as the new seniors and dominate.”
Albany’s 2025-2026 basketball season was a great accomplishment, making it further than they’ve gone in years. The chemistry, camaraderie, and skill that they put forth this season are exceptional, making it no surprise that they made it as far as they did.

The varsity boys soccer team had an impressive season this year, showing significant growth and determination. The team finished with an overall record of 14 wins, one loss, and two ties and while in league they went 9-0-2, getting first place. They also beat their rivals, Saint Mary’s, in the TCAL championship, securing the title of TCAL champions! The team demonstrated consistency and resilience throughout the season.
Their performance in NCS was especially notable, as they reached the semi-finals against Berkeley. A combination of strong defense, effective communication, and relentless effort on offense helped the team succeed in several key matchups, including important turning points that defined their season.
Adrian Baruzzi, sophomore, says, “Our team worked so hard this season. There was lots of team chemistry on and off the field which helped us work so well together.” Highlighting the dedication and mindset that drove their progress. The players’ chemistry and trust in one another, along with the leadership from coaches and captains, played a crucial role in their success.
Captain Lucca Sweet Zapata, senior, says, “This year our team was connected on a more emotional level, which helped us dominate during games because we cared for and supported each other.” Emphasizing the pride and unity within the group.
Overall, the team’s achievements this year not only demonstrate how far they have come but also set a promising foundation for continued success in the future seasons.

The girls varsity basketball team put together a strong and memorable season, highlighted by their 11 wins and one loss as well as the achievement as co-league champions. Finishing with an overall record of 15 wins and 11 losses, the team demonstrated skill, determination, and teamwork throughout the year. Their success in league earned them a share of the league title, showcasing their ability to compete at a high level against tough opponents.
Captain, Tenzin Palzom, senior, says, “There was a lot of adjusting to how we played because the team was so different from last year but we worked hard and had a successful season.” Capturing the effort and mindset that fueled their success.
Heading into the TCAL championship game, the team battled hard but ultimately fell to Vallejo, marking a challenging yet valuable experience. Despite that setback, they had many accomplishments that reflected their hard work and dedication all season long.
Tenzin Chakantsang, freshman, says, “Being a freshman, I was definitely nervous at the start of the season but everyone was so supportive and welcoming. Our team had a close bond and I think it helped us play better too.” She strongly emphasizes the community in the team.
Although their postseason run ended with a loss in the first round of NCS, the team’s perseverance and strong chemistry stood out as defining qualities. With effective communication, leadership, and a commitment to improvement, the girls varsity basketball team not only celebrated major achievements this season but also a strong desire to go even farther next season!
