Why do the teachers have red hair?

If you saw teachers with red hair on last Thursday morning, it can only mean one thing: STAR test time!

When the teachers were asked whom to blame on, Principal Ted Barone was the answer.

In order to have students relax and pay more attention to the STAR test, the school administration asked the teachers to show their pride by spraying their head’s red. However, the impact of spraying teacher’s hair will not be known until July.

Nevertheless, the school administration wants the students to take the tests seriously this year because the 2007 STAR showed mixed results.

In 2007, the overall AHS STAR scores increased slightly compared to year 2006: an aggregate score of 832 up from 830. However, according to AHS principal, Ted Barone, some subject area scores decreased.

Seventy two percent of the class of ‘10 scored proficient or above in English Language Arts, one percent higher than 2006 and much higher than the state average of 47%. However, In English, the class of ‘09 decreased to sixty four percent proficient in 2007 down from 68 percent the year before.

In 2007, math scores increased slightly for the whole school. Social studies scores, however, decreased for both the class of ‘08 and the class of ‘09 in comparison to 2006.

In science, the class of ‘09 remained constant while class of ‘08 science scores dropped.

When was asked why English Language Arts scores decrease as the grade levels goes up, Barone said it happens not just at AHS, but also at Albany Middle School, and the nation as a whole. One possible reason might be that sophomores and juniors do not take the tests seriously. In fact, the overall AHS STAR results mirror the nation, Barone said.

STAR testing continues through Wednesday, April 30.
