Computers are wonderful things. In school, they allow us to pursue whatever research we desire. We can easily write papers for all of our classes. But most importantly, we can play Internet games to kill time in some of the slower classes. Here is a countdown of the best flash games on the Internet:

5. Helicopter Game

This old, classic game has been around for years, and is still a great time-waster. You are a helicopter, traveling through a narrow tunnel. Provoking the question, why would a helicopter have to travel through a tunnel (I have come up with a story involving people stranded in a cave for some reason, who are picked up by a helicopter, which then has to travel back through the cave to take the people to safety…but I digress…). There are small barriers in your way, and you must navigate around the them and try to get the highest score possible. Although this game sounds boringly simple, you will quickly be wrapped up in trying to beat your high score.

4. Squares 2

The goal of this simple game is to catch the black squares while avoiding the red ones. As you absorb the black squares, your square will become larger, and the squares will go faster. There are also black circle-shaped power-ups (such as slow-motion and invincibility), as well as red, circle-shaped power-downs (fast-motion, -1,000 points). The game keeps track of the number of squares you have grabbed and of your score. This ensures that you will play the game over and over, just to reach a new high score or the arbitrary goals that you set for yourself (such as getting 100 squares). Also, it’s impossible to resist the infectious, Euro-dance club beat that plays during the game.

3. Tetris

Although there are many incarnations of this game on the Internet, the best by far is the one found at freetetris.org. This game has always been a classic, and has lasted almost as long as video games have existed.

2. Bloons Tower Defense 2

A spinoff of the popular Bloon series, this is truly the best tower defense game available. In the game, you buy several types of monkeys, who attempt to shoot balloons before they reach the far side of the trail that they are traveling on. Although it takes a while to get going, this game eventually gets very exciting near the end, when the balloons start flying across the screen and your legion of monkeys and artillery
destroys them.

1. Kitten Cannon

Kitten Cannon is truly the best online game of all time. In this game, for those of you who have not had the privilege of playing it, you shoot a kitten out of a cannon, and watch as the little animal flies across the screen. There are various harmful items in his path, some of which propel it forward (the TNT boxes and missiles), and others stop it in its tracks (the cactuses and spikes). The goal is to get the longest distance possible. As the kitten bounces off the ground, he lets out pathetic “mew”s and produces a blood spot. When it hits a cactus or spikes, he is completely impaled, and blood spews forth from all the holes. Not only is this game violent, it is also incredibly addictive. After shooting the kitten once, you will want to do it again to beat your score. And then again…and again…and again…
