The Cougar receives 28 journalism awards
On Tuesday May 13, 17 Albany High School journalists were honored at the Northern California Press Women/San Francisco Press Club’s annual High School Journalism Competition. In total, these student journalists received 28 awards in 14 categories. Albany High journalists received three first place finishes, as many as any other high school in the competition.
Multiple award winners include: Eric Beeson for editorial writing; Nina Lincoff for graphics and layout; Jackie Quinn for news writing and layout; Kevin Quirolo for feature writing and graphics; and Jose Rivera-Lerman for photography and graphics.
Jackie Quinn (news writing and layout) and Kevin Quirolo (graphics) earned first place awards. In addition to cash awards, their submissions are being judged in the National Press Women competition.
Other winners include Madeleine Miller-Bottome, Jay Healy, Artemis Jenkins, Rachel Krow-Boniske, Andrew Sutherland, Lia Kato, Sean Smith, Rees Blanchard, Will Kasten and 2007 graduates Leslie Ribovich, Laura Marostica and Zack Lewis.
This is the greatest number of Albany students to win awards and the largest total number of awards won since Albany High has participated in this 30-year-old competition. It is particularly gratifying that Albany High won as many first place awards as journalism powerhouse Palo Alto High.
Congratulations are in order for these winners and all Albany High journalists.
A huge thanks is due to the Albany community as well – citizens, parents, faculty, administrators, public officials and the Contra Costa County Office of Education ROP program. In an era when high school journalism is in peril, but needed the most, you provide us the funding, the access, the freedom and the encouragement.
