Summer at the Movies
One of the quintessential parts of being a teenager in the summer is seeing the massive number of movies that blitzes the theater every June through August. In case you missed any of them, here are a few reviews of the films that came out this summer.
Superbad (comedy): If you have not seen or heard about the new film Superbad by now, you have probably been living in a cave for the past month. Seriously, just yell out “Superbad” right now, and I guarantee you that everyone within earshot will begin discussing their favorite scene with the person next to them. Superbad is, without a doubt, the funniest movie of the year. Every cast member involved, from Michael Hill (who plays the main character Evan) to Christopher Mintz-Plasse (who plays the pathetically nerdy Fogell) to Seth Rogan (who also wrote the film) gives an uproarious performance. If you have not seen Superbad, leave class right now, go to the nearest theater and buy a ticket.

The Simpsons Movie (comedy): As a Simpsons fan, watching the show lately has been like watching an old friend slowly succumb to Alzheimer’s. The jokes have become lamer and lamer, and one is forced to reflect back to the days when the show was edgy and hilarious. The movie succeeds in bringing back some of the edgy hilarity of the show, partly because the creators were given more freedom than the FCC allows (one scene actually flashes Bart’s penis briefly, and Otto is shown smoking a bong). This fact, however, did not save the film from being nothing more than OK.

Knocked Up (romantic comedy): Another hilarious movie by the people who brought us The 40 Year Old Virgin. This is yet another example of the genius of Seth Rogan, who plays the main character and wrote the movie. There is a close-up of a birth scene, which is gross in concept, but is incredibly unrealistic; it looks like a rubber sheet with a slit in it is having a wet teddy bear shoved through it - and it only lasts a second or so.
4/5 stars
Transformers (action): This is an entertaining movie full of huge explosions and awesome robot fights. However, it takes a while for the Transformers to show up, and there is a strange “black” transformer who speaks in corny slang, saying things like “this looks like a cool place to kick it” and it has a rather stupid script (in the end, Optimus Prime, the leader of the Transformers, actually says that there is “more to humans than meets the eye”).
3/5 stars
1408 (horror/thriller): This movie was actually quite enjoyable, despite the fact that it did not generate much hype. It provides the appropriate number of jumps and chills required to make a good thriller, and will probably make you afraid to stay in a hotel room for quite a while. Plus, it’s got Samuel L. Jackson!
