Solution to boredom
I am your friend. And I have to say that the only thing more annoying than having to sit inside school for eight hours a day, bored out of your mind, is having to pretend to listen to someone complain about it after you’ve been freed.
You can tell that you are bored when you resort to groaning about boring things. I don’t want to hear about the homework that you were so unfairly assigned, because that’s not my problem. The fact is that if you are complaining, you probably aren’t too happy with whatever it is you want me to listen to. As a friend, the best thing for me to do is to lend a sympathetic ear and provide helpful comments where they may help. But since friendship is one of those two-to-tango things, you can attempt to help me not blow up my eardrums.
Instead of grumbling about how tired you are of your daily routine, go out and do something that excites you and makes your life enjoyable. Engage yourself in an activity that provides you with something else to share with your friends. They will appreciate it, that’s a promise.
This new activity can also benefit you. Albany High School counselor Doug Kagawa said, “high school is an individual process, but for the most part, the academics are the foundation. Students have to enrich their lives by finding something else to do in the ‘hang-time’ after school. A great strategy is to find and pursue your interests, because colleges love when you are passionate about what you do.”
In fact, you could do almost anything if it keeps you from complaining. Go rock climbing, organize a bike ride at the Berkeley Marina with some friends, or learn to play the guitar using YouTube videos. Volunteer if it makes you happy, and if it gets rid of the slow hours, find a job, but make sure that it pays well, requires little to no thought and very few hours.
Once you have found your new personal activity, whether it be a new sport, a challenging instrument, or a fun hobby, your day will be a little more unique and a little less boring.
And your friends will thank you.
