Sean Penn’s Into The Wild
Into the Wild, directed by Sean Penn, has brought just under $1 million into the box office since its release on September 21, 2007. Penn’s latest achievement brings to the screen the true story of Christopher McCandless (actor: Emile Hirsch), who sets forth on a journey into the wilderness of Alaska and never comes back. This movie follows Jon Krakauer’s bestseller detailing the 22-year-old man’s adventures into the wild.
After graduating from Emory University in Atlanta, McCandless realizes that he no longer wants to be a part of his parents’ indulgent lives. McCandless’ journey is motivated by the growing disconnect he feels with his parents. Hoping to isolate himself from the materialistic lifestyle that so many people take for granted, McCandless donates his $24 thousand to Oxfam (an organization attempting to help those who are suffering from poverty) and says goodbye to his old life.
Along the way to Alaska he meets unforgettable characters that will change the way anyone sees life. The transformation that overcomes McCandless is brought about because of these priceless moments he shares with each character.
Christopher soon finds himself experiencing his first winter in Alaska, away from any kind of civilization. The few clothes he has, the abandoned bus he uses for shelter and the few things he knows about the wilderness are the things that keep him living.
With spectacular footage of Yosemite, Colorado, and Alaska the lack of box office that has been made off of this movie is almost inexplicable. I could not find anything wrong with the movie, and can only guess that the sadness of the actual story has played a role in its lack of popularity. The movie is rated R, which does put restrictions on the viewers who are allowed to see the movie without a parent. However, I highly recommend this movie because we have all, at some point, felt a little distant from our parents.
Do not miss seeing Into the Wild in theaters because the scenes are a must see on the big screen. Not to mention, the ending will leave you speechless.
