School Uniforms Announced!

The fashion of Albany High School might change for next year, not because the fashion industries came up with new designs, but because everybody will soon look alike.

During the Albany Unified School District board meeting of March 3rd, a new uniform requirement was discussed for Albany High School.

“So far, most members of the school board are in favor of the new proposal,” Principal Ted Barone commented.

According to Ted Barone, if the proposal passes during the next school board meeting, all students starting next year will be required to wear uniforms during school hours and will not be allowed to use any hair products. Any students who fail to adhere to the dress code will be sent home in the first offense. A second offense will result in detention, and a third offense will result in two-day suspension.

“There are just too many student visitors in our school, so I am glad that such a proposal is being drafted for our safety,” Junior Alia McKean said.

For the past few years, students have been complaining that many non-Albany High students are passing through the school without permission and these visitors often destroy the school property.

“I saw one visitor spray some pink graffiti on the girl’s bathroom door and then ran away,” junior Amy Hershberger said.

According to the proposal, a boy’s complete uniform (white shirt, red tie, and brown pants) will cost $100 while the girl’s complete uniform (same as boy’s uniform) will cost also the same price.

“If anyone has any new design ideas, you can go to the next school board meeting,” Barone said.

The money raised from selling uniforms will be used to support variety of sports and art programs, which are facing budget cuts.

However, not everyone is happy with the new proposal.

“My hair and my clothes are my only source of expression these days,” complained Inbal Sarig, a fashion-forward senior.

The next school board meeting will be Tuesday, April 7th, which will decide the fate of next year’s Albany High fashion.
