Lady Cougars crush Salesian 4-0
On the heels of their 3-2 loss at Piedmont, the Varsity Women’s soccer team rebounded with a crushing 4-0 win over Salesian on January 30th. Though Salesian has a strong varsity team, the Albany Cougars were unwilling to suffer another defeat or draw in order to keep alive their dream of making.
The four goals were scored by freshmen Lilia Taboada, Maddie Kirkby and Robin Mertens, and sophomore Jessica Quinn.
Taboada, Quinn, and Kirkby scored in the first half: Taboada off a cross into the box, Quinn on a beautiful shot into the top corner of the net and Kirby on a breakaway.
Mertens added to the score in the second half on a free kick.
What was perhaps the most entertaining moment, although quite painful on victim’s behalf, was Mari Pastor’s “ninja kick” to the opposing goalkeeper’s stomach, for which she received a yellow card.
The foul was, according to freshman Marissa Wise, “really funny because Mari would be the last person to hurt somebody. Once, she even refused to shoot the ball in practice because she didn’t want to hit the ladybug she had seen earlier.”
Come support the Cougars in their quest for NCS this Friday at Cougar Field at 5:30 pm against Saint Mary’s
