New Counselor in the House

New AHS Counselor Kirsten DrakeIf your last name starts with the letters Hs – Ma, line up! Everyone with these initials has been assigned to a brand new counselor and her name is Kirsten Drake.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and the state legislature are providing extra money to schools. The money is an effort to even out the ratio of the number of students to available counselors. Every middle school and high school in California will be receiving money to hire an extra counselor. Lucky for us, Albany High was one of the first schools to receive the money and one of the fastest to hire one.

Drake is a native of the Bay Area and an alumnus of Berkeley High School. She was also the assistant Varsity softball coach for two years. Some of you may have already seen her roaming the halls at Albany High— she was a counseling intern at Albany High. Drake described Albany High as having, “a great, great atmosphere” and is excited be a full-time counselor. She shows a genuine interest in the students at Albany High School, stating, “I want to be able help students achieve their goals— I want to see them succeed.”

It may be challenging to get one-on-one time with Ms. Drake, though— she doesn’t have an office of her own, so she floats from place to place without a schedule — but hunting her down (wherever she is) and trying to befriend her can’t hurt— especially if your last name starts with Hs – Ma.

We need to make her feel at home. And besides, you know you want that good college recommendation.
