Must watch: Dexter

No, it’s not Dexter’s laboratory, although many of you may remember that cartoon. This Dexter appears on Showtime every Sunday at 11:00 pm, and captivated me after I saw a few episodes. A warning though: Dexter is a rather dark, adult program, so freshmen beware!

Dexter is a very interesting show with plot twists and suspense that focuses on the life of Dexter Morgan, a Miami City blood splatter analyst. Dexter has to hide his secret life of killing serial killers. This makes him a serial killer. His sister also works for the homicide department, and is his only remaining family. His father Harry, a former cop, is dead from the start of the show, but keeps returning in flashbacks. In these flashbacks, Harry teaches Dexter how to kill people without getting caught.

The story is based on a book called Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, which I haven’t read yet. Dexter is adopted into the Morgan family at the beginning. He went through some trauma as a young child, which is why he has the urge to kill. Harry becomes a godlike figure to Dexter, and is able to turn his urges to kill upon the wrong doers who escape punishment in the legal system or can’t be proven guilty in a legal manner. He is forced to follow rules in his killings though, to keep him safe and not give away his secret.

Dexter is a very graphic, violent series, but its story is unique. The actors are enjoyable to watch, and overall Dexter is a superb show. This show is available on Showtime, and I’ve seen a few episodes during the week. The first two episodes are also online at http://www.sho.com/site/dexter/home.do and as the season is coming to an end, the whole season should be available in the spring. Well, this has been another attempt to make you watch TV. Enjoy.
