Mountain biking team racing along

Junior Zach Alexander surges ahead of the packThe Albany High School mountain biking team is little known around the school, but the team is already well into its second season. The team was started last year as a club, and has a strong core of returning members, as well as some newcomers. Sophomores Ian Breunig and Connor Chapman are president and vice-president, respectively, and the rest of the team is composed of Zach Alexander, Jennifer Breunig, Corey Chin, Jesse Evans, Daniel Goodman, Daniel Menezes1, Charlotte Perry-Houts, Aviva Prager, and Sophie Worthington. Eryn Hughes coaches the team and Dean Becker is the faculy adviser.

There have already been three races for the team this year. Locations tend to be relatively far away, as this year the team has competed in Monterey, Lake Folsom, and Salinas. Though not competing at the top, the team has made considerable improvements from last year as well as the beginning of this year.

The boys race in four divisions: freshman (frosh), sophomores (soph), junior varsity, and varsity, while the girls race in three divisions: frosh-soph, junior varsity, and varsity. Frosh boys and frosh-soph girls races are generally around 10-12 miles, soph boys and JV races are generally around 15-18 miles, and varsity races are generally around 20-25 miles.

The team has two more races this year before NorCal State Championships on May 20 and looks to continue to improve from the rest of the way.

1 = Update 4/26/07: The Cougar has been informed that Daniel Menezes is no longer riding for Albany High, as he has transferred out of the school. He is now riding in the Norcal league as an independent at El Sobrante High School, although he still trains with the Albany High team.

  4. Someone there should contact Nick Agate about his representing Albany High School in the NorCal High Mt Bike race series from 2002-2004. Nick tried to get a team together at that time, but there wasn’t any interest. Not to be discouraged, he continued racing and represented the school as a solo team rider. In 2003, Nick took 2nd place in the Individual Race Category and in 2004 he was the Champion. He has a coveted Yellow Race Jersey to prove it and would like to one day see it hang in the school gymnasium.

Nick can be reached at mrcharles14@yahoo.com.
