Madrigal Delights

The Madrigal hit the stage last weekend with a royal bang! The audience enjoyed an evening filled with delicious food and superb singing from the men and womens choir as well as the award-winning Advanced Chorale.
At 7:30 p.m. the doors opened and in walked a slow precession of choristers dressed in vivid and colorful layers of medieval clothing. Gail Starr, Marguerite and Natalie Buck-Bauer individually designed every costume from hat to tights.
The true charm of the Madrigal is in its rhyming dialogue and discreetly suggestive lyrics. The men from choral and choir joined together and sang separate stanzas of the song, “Please, Kind Sir.” By listening carefully to the lyrics, it was clear they described looking up a woman’s dress.
There was never a dull moment during this action-packed night. The audience was entertained by a swordfight between Sir Prance-A-Lot, the fearless knight and the court’s comical jester. Later, the Spice Girls performed the traditional folk song,  “Scarborough Fair”. Last but not least, the jester and Flora the Flea performed a wondrous and daring circus act.
Overall, the Madrigal was comically entertaining and enjoyable. All the singers did a fantastic job as did the knight and jester (Ulysses Popple and Erik Staley). Now we’ll have to wait until next year to see another stunning performance.
