Madrigal a success
The AHS choir department took students and faculty back to the Middle Ages Friday and Saturday nights for the AHS Madrigal production. A combination of singing and acting, the Madrigal featured Ulysses Popple as the brave knight, Marc Kim as the king, Marina Zubareva as the queen, David Spies as the duke, and Steven Sloan as the fair lady.
Guests feasted on free chicken wings, pasta, as well as assorted cookies and brownies while laughing at one-liners written into the Madrigal script.
The singers were balanced and in-tune and the plot was easy to follow. The choir department used many of the same jokes as they used in last year’s Madrigal performance, but the light, comfortable atmosphere kept the audience chuckling anyway. The only drawback to the performance was the lighting struggle. The rectangle of lighted stage was not big enough to allow the singers with star roles enough space to perform.
Actors and actresses dressed in elaborate costumes of olden times passed between the lighted recessed portion of the stage and the dark front of the stage more than enough times to keep viewers squinting to follow their progress.
But the production was quite obviously well received nonetheless. One excited young woman exclaimed, “I actually thoroughly enjoyed that!” following the show.
