Lady Cougars win 20th Annual Anne Scott Classic
Playing in their first competitive tournament of the new season, the Lady Cougars took on the James Logan Mighty Colts on Thursday, November 29th, to kick off the 20th Annual Anne Scott Classic.
Led by 6’3’’ freshman sensation Dianna Calhoun’s 17 points, 11 rebounds (4 offensive), and 4 blocks, the Cougars stormed out of the gates and held on in the second half while playing their reserves for a convincing 59-48 victory.
The semi-finals didn’t prove to be much more of a challenge for the Cougars. Despite a lackluster game from Calhoun, the Cougars, led by seniors Tori Nicks, Joan and Laura Cannon held on against the host Drake Pirates for a 49-37 victory and a spot in the championship game versus the Hercules Lady Titans.
The Cougars and Titans took the court looking to exploit each others’ weaknesses. Both teams’ defensive schemes worked to perfection for the first 16 minutes, with both squads going into the half knotted up at 20 a piece.
With the teams trading baskets for a majority of the game, Crystal Peterson took command in the final minutes, scoring a huge two-point shot to take a 41-40 lead with 1:08 to go.
Hercules answered with a big three-pointer of their own, taking a two point lead, only for Peterson to ice it with a beautiful three with 37 seconds to go.
Following a miss on the front end of a 1 and 1 by Tamaya Newsome with 5 seconds to go, the Titans took the ball the length of the court, only to see their attempt at a game-winning shot from just inside the free throw line hit the back of the rim, sending the Cougars and the crowd into jubilation at their extremely well played victory.
Congratulations to the Cougars (3-2) for winning the 20th Annual Ann Scott Classic. Be sure to come out and support them in their next home game on December 18th, versus the Salesian Pride.
