Lady Cougars off to a quick start

Senior Julia Akoteu spikes the ballAs anticipated, the Albany High Cougars volleyball team is off to a strong start.

Albany got the regular season underway on Thursday, September 6, against Las Lomas. The ladies easily disposed of the competition, winning in straight sets (3-0) by scores of 25-17, 28-26, and 25-19. Albany played the game solidly throughout and rarely faltered in the opening match. Seniors Nicky Hagen and Jana Poole led the Cougars with 14 kills and 13 kills, respectively, while junior Kaitlyn Giblin led the team with 8 digs.

The ladies carried the momentum of their first regular season victory over into their first league game on Thursday, September 13, 2007.

BSAL foe John Swett came to Albany and was promptly defeated by the Cougars 3-0. It was an easy victory for Albany, but not a particularly strong showing. Granted, the reserves came in at then end of the second game, but at times the ladies appeared to be playing down to their competition and were actually trailing 8-3 at one point during the third game. However, the Cougars pulled it together and finished off Swett without having to work too hard.

Members of the Albany High School student section, The Cave, were in attendance for both games and were particularly helpful in creating a home court advantage against Las Lomas.

The next game for the volleyball team is Monday, September 17, against St. Joseph Notre Dame.
