Juniors take Homecoming Volleyball Final
Students walked into the gym on Wednesday to cries of “ONE-OH, ONE-OH” on the north bleachers and “OH-NINE, OH-NINE” on the south side. Yellow seniors filled up a solid half of their bleachers, leaving the other half totally devoid of students. Green sophomores and pink freshmen sided with the mass of orange juniors.
The battle for the boys Volleyball final was on.
The atmosphere was competitive even as players warmed up prior to the arrival of the referee, English teacher Justin Ross. The players and coaches lined up in their places, both sides pumped up by the deafening team cheers.
At the onset, the juniors had a difficult time holding up against the senior’s star server, John Ludwig. However, the juniors showed their prowess at spiking the ball several times during the game. Both sides “consulted” Ross over every point he gave to the other team. In the audience, both sides cheered for all they were worth. Ultimately, the seniors were the victors in the first game.
The teams switched sides for the second game, with seniors moving to the east side of the gym with their yellow rooting section following them to the east end of the bleachers. Observers were hopeful that the junior supporters would not duplicate this maneuver and trample their sophomore and freshman friends.
The juniors had their volleyball life on the line; if they lost this match by more than two points the seniors would be the winners. The orange, green and pink audience members breathed a sigh of relief when the juniors emerged victorious in game two.
“ONE-OH!” cheers erupted.
For the deciding match, “Oh nine, oh nine oh nine oh nine” lyrics were put to the tune of oh-eight’s cheering song. As the juniors and seniors bumped, set and spiked, yellow cheerleaders taunted juniors with cries of “They don’t want it!” to which the juniors replied “POW-DER-PUFF, POW-DER-PUFF!”
The score went back and forth in the seven-point sudden death match. The yellow stands yelled “WHY SO QUIET?” as orange cried “WE CAN’T HEAR YOU!”
When the juniors reached six points the orange crowd, sensing or assuming a win, bombarded the court in a hysteric mass. There was no stopping their fanatic voices, but their bodies were shooed back into the stands by Ross’s emphatic hand motions and orange players eager to get on with the game.
The seniors next serve was met with a perfect bump, set, and spike to give the juniors an eagerly anticipated win. This time, though, the juniors could hysterically celebrate the real victory.
