Homecoming Tuesday - Color War Day
Albany High School, day two of homecoming week, color war day, bedlam, chanting, and spirit.
This morning the juniors tried their hand at decorating the school, draping trees and handrails with yellow streamers. A large poster of a bling-bedecked Big Bird proclaims the superiority of the class of 2009. To top it off, they constructed a paper yellow brick road leading to the front doors of the school.
Sometime before break, a covert operation of seniors dropped pink balloons and confetti down from the atrium balconies, in defiance of the juniors.
During break, excitement broke into chanting mosh-pits of class unity. Flags were waved, hand signs were thrown up, and numbers were shouted. The general splendor of it all almost made yesterday’s murderous can competition fade from memory. Everyone was in unity, against everyone else.
“I think this is the most people I’ve ever seen dress up,” said assistant principal Tami Benau, apprehensive of her job of counting the participants at lunchtime. Indeed it was, when the classes trickled into the gym for the Boy’s Volley Ball game, the four swarms of students created thick blocks of green, orange, yellow and pink in the bleachers.
Compared to color-war-day two years ago, this year was very mild. No riots occurred, for example. The classes respected each other’s right to be younger. It was a good day.
