Golf team wraps up preseason
Since its creation four years ago, Albany High School’s golf team has improved greatly. Last tear the team finished the season with a 6-4 record, second behind Piedmont in BSAL play. This qualified the team for the NCS championship, one of its goals.
This year however, the Cougars have their eyes set on being the king of the mountain in the BSAL.
The team is coached by Colin Fleming, who is also the coach of the new girls golf team, Fred Brown, and head coach Jim Zahradka.
“I very strongly believe that if our team can go out on the course and play golf the best they can we will win first place in BSAL, and qualify for NCS, which is our top goal.” Coach Zahradka said encouragingly.
The team includes captain and junior John Ludwig, seniors Aaron Waterhouse, Peter Boaz, and Roan Bibby, juniors Jordan Osborn, Peter “HRU-HRU” Hruska, Logan Navilier and freshman Dassel Pak.
“I think we have very good experience as a team, and also I think we will do very well,” says captain John Ludwig.
With other schools losing a lot of their seniors, the Cougars believe that they have a great shot at dominating their league. Go Cougars!
After finishing preseason with a 3-1 record, the Cougars started league play started on Thursday March 6th and beat St. Joseph Notre Dame at Mira Vista Country Club in El Cerrito.
This year however the team will be without Joy Kim, who was last year’s best golfer. Kim was a great help to the Cougars advancing to NCS. Because Albany has a girls’ team, Kim cannot play for the boys.
In a high school match, a team is allowed to play six golfers. At the end of the match each team takes the top five (or lowest scores) of the six to make their final score.
