Golf Preview! They’re Back!

Although it is only the second year at AHS for the girls golf team, they have had a great start.  Last year the girls posted an impressive 12-2 record and won the BSAL championship.

This year’s seven-member team includes seniors Joy Kim, Nara Pak, Alicia Lee and juniors Kiyomi Doty, Nina Waloewandja, Mari Yamato and sophomore Emily Sun.  While some team members are experienced and have been playing golf for nearly eight years, others started playing golf just this year.

Their Cougar coaching staff, including two head coaches, Colin Flemming and Jim Zahradka, has helped the beginners learn the necessary skills to play on the competitive golf team.

Having a team of only seven girls is a small when compared to Saint Mary’s, but Albany’s team is just as good or even better.  “Saint Mary’s has a big team, but it’s just a lot of people.  Our team actually tries really hard and it works out,” senior captain Joy Kim said.

Having a small team with some inexperienced members doesn’t stop the Cougars from expecting to repeat as BSAL champions.  Last year, competition in the BSAL included Piedmont and Hercules, but with Hercules leaving to join a different league, Albany’s main rival is Piedmont.  Captain Joy Kim said that she believes the Cougars can have another impressive record in league and win the BSAL championship.

At present the Cougar record is 3-0.  The Cougars will be playing arch-rival Piedmont on Thursday, October 2.
