Girls BBall season ends at NCS

Albany soars high but falls flatThe Albany girl’s basketball season came to an end last Friday night with a loss in the second round of NCS to Dublin 62-48. Dublin’s, pressure defense and clutch shooting was too much for the Cougars to handle.

The game started off very slowly as both teams struggled to score points due to great defense. In the second quarter both teams got on track. The third quarter remained close until Dublin gained momentum and took that the rest of the way with a strong display of shooting from the free throw line.

Dublin advances to the next round of NCS where they will play Miramonte on Wednesday. For Albany this is the end of a successful season. They finished with an impressive 17-10 record and got a bye in the first round of NCS.

The loss marks the end of six Albany seniors’ high school basketball career. Tori Nicks, Laura Cannon, Joan Cannon, Martha Vanbik, Maya Pisciotto, and Alice Chang all played great basketball over the years for Albany.

Even with the loss of these players, Albany still should be very good next year. Freshman phenom Deanna Calhoun returns for her sophomore season and the team will have good guard play with Tamaya Newsome, and Vanessa Kelley and solid inside/outside game with forward Crystal Peterson.
