Friday Night Movie Review : Quarantine
Friday night with the girls, looking for a late-night scare, we decided to hit up the video rental store. After wandering for a few moments, we came across a very intriguing DVD. The cover image sold the movie for us. We decided to rent… Quarantine.
The movie is based on the Spanish film, Quarantina. It is filmed in a nouveau fashion, with the hand-held camcorder effects. At times this makes for a queasy feeling, but overall it adds to the realism of the film, and makes it seem more personal.
The plot of the film goes like this… A woman news reporter goes to a fire department to shadow a day in the life of a firefighter for her daily viewers. The department gets a call and she and her cameraman decide to tag along to get some live action footage at the scene of an emergency. Once at the scene, they’re escorted into a building where screams were claimed to be heard. They follow the screams to a room where a possessed woman foams at the mouth. Everything goes down a very steep hill from there.
The movie, as it the title indicates, is about being quarantined. The characters in the film are trapped in an apartment building. Slowly, character after character comes down with the frightening illness.
It wasn’t the scariest film ever made, but it had some moments that really snuck up and plagued us with vivid images. It was good because unlike all of the ever-so-common torture films, it had a unique take on an illness that many of us worry about. Overall we had some screams and we all ended up holding hands, hiding under myriad blankets, and crying. We suggest seeing it, and on a side note, make sure you’re not around any unusual dogs, rats, or humans.
