Dreamgirls— Definitely Worth Your Bucks

If you love rich, soulful 60’s R&B music and dazzling costumes, Dreamgirls is the movie to watch. Dreamgirls, a remake of the fabulous Broadway musical, stars Beyoncé Knowles, Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy, and Jennifer Hudson (from American Idol). Both critics and the general audience have given it great ratings. This is not very surprising since the performances of all the actors in the movie are incredibly convincing and well-delivered. Even Beyoncé Knowles, who has proved to be a weak actress in many films, managed to pull together and make the magic happen. Especially in the scene where she confronts her husband, Curtis Taylor (Jamie Foxx), about taking charge of her own courier and moving away from Curtis’s influence, she surprises the audience with stronog, persuasive acting. Overall, the movie keeps the audience involved and on the tips of their toes.

Dreamgirls is a story about three female singers traveling with James “Thunder,” a superstar, while seeking for their own success and fame. As this trio struggles to gain the spotlight, they suffer through many obstacles, dramas, and conflicts. However, they manage to push through the hindering objects with determination and power and eventually manage to reach their dreams. This story is not just about struggles to reach success, however— it is also about pain, love, isolation, and search for one’s identity. You’ll probably laugh and cry with this movie just like I did when I first watched it.

Now, for you musical-haters, don’t be intimidated by this movie. Even I, who hate movies that are remakes of musicals, loved Dreamgirls. There are many, maybe too many songs in the movie, but they all work excellently to make the movie a whole. Dreamgirls is an excellent piece of work, and it’s bound to dazzle everybody who comes to watch it.
