Cougars swim against Panthers
On Thursday, April 17 the Cougars swam against the Saint Mary’s Panthers at Contra Costa Pool. It was a warm afternoon—swimmers who weren’t in the pool sunbathed on the pool deck while cheering on teammates. Though Contra Costa pool was large, the warm-up lanes were occupied by various swim programs and the high school swimmers were forced to try and warm-up on land before their races. Albany High alumni and part-time coach Guyen Enkhbileg helped lead warm-up stretches behind the blocks.
Despite the lack of warm-up lanes, the Cougars swam hard and won most of the events against the opposing Panthers. Saint Mary’s has no JV teams, so the JV girls and JV boys won 143-0, 139-0, respectively, by default.
The varsity girls, including speedy club swimmers senior Ursula Dailey and sophomore Catherine Dunn, dominated the panthers, winning 119-61.
The varsity boys felt the loss of last year’s graduating seniors and the speed of the Saint Mary’s boys, losing 82-88.
The Cougars swam especially well in the 100 and 200 IM, taking first places in both events. Junior Csilla Toth got an early lead in her heat and won the JV girls’ 100 IM with a time of 1:25.30. Sophomore Eugene Yang followed by winning the JV boys’ 100 IM with a time of 1:19.78. Freshmen Mina Clahan swam hard and won the varsity girls’ 200 IM, achieving a time of 2:37.34. Senior Julian Le completed the winning streak by placing first in his heat with a time of 2:30.72.
The Albany swimmers’ next meet is at Cunningham Pool this Thursday, April 24, against St. Patrick’s, St. Vincent’s, and Holy Names High School. The BSAL championships are on Saturday, May 10th at El Cerrito Pool. Keep it up Cougars!
