Cougars suffer loss to Pride
On Friday, Cougar fans at Memorial field witnessed the Cougar baseball team suffer their fifth loss of the season that dropped their overall record to 10-5. After starting the season with six consecutive wins, the baseball team has experienced a rough 4-5 slump capped by Friday’s loss to the Salesian Pride.
The Pride came out clubbing and scored four first inning runs off starter Kyle Shipley. The Cougars responded in the bottom of the first with four runs of their own to even up the score. Following a 3-up, 3-down second inning for both squads, Salesian regained the lead by scoring in the third, tagging on another two runs in the fourth, and having a player cross home in the fifth.
Down 8-4 in the bottom of the fifth, senior Kyle Shipley homered to left, bringing in junior Jonathon Hicks. The scored remained stagnant until the bottom of the seventh due to a diving catch by Shipley, which stifled the Pride rally.
In the bottom of the final inning, sophomore Ellis Stephney homered for the seventh time this season, bringing the Cougars to within a single run. Shipley singled and was followed by freshman Myles Babbit who did the same. With two outs and runners on fist and second, senior Derek Uchiumi lined out to left to end the Cougar threat.
With an important game against rival Saint Marys today, the Cougars currently sit in fourth place in the Bay Shore League and hope to return to Cougar field by the end of the week.
