Cougars roll over Bruins in near perfect match
The Albany High men’s tennis team is now rolling on a perfect 3-0 record after winning against St. Patrick’s/St. Vincent’s. On Thursday, March 13, the Cougar men traveled to Vallejo for the match against the St. Pat’s Bruins.
The Cougars were near perfect in the match, dominating the Bruins 7-1.
In this match, Albany’s three doubles teams displayed solid play by anchoring the team with three strong victories.
Senior Andrew Sparks and freshman Chu-Meng Li finished their match in hasty fashion, defeating their opponents 6-0, 6-1 for the first victory. Sophomores Edmund Hsu and Dennis Hua were victorious as well, winning 6-3, 6-2. To wrap up the doubles victories, freshmen tandem Johnny Weng and Simon Chen defeated their opponents in a close match, winning 6-4, 7-5.
The singles players also played well with no exceptions. Junior David Trejo, number one singles player, won his match 6-4, 6-3. Freshman Brian Ling was one of the first to finish his match, winning 6-0, 6-2. Despite losing his match against St. Joe’s last week, sophomore Ali Zavar was not bothered by the loss. He remained poised and played with consistency, winning his match 6-3, 6-2.
The lone loss of the match was the singles match played by senior Ohad Gilberg. This match was Gilberg’s season debut, as he had been sidelined with a hand injury for the first three matches of the season. Despite being out for so long, Gilberg played solidly as he returned to play as the number two singles player. Throughout the match, there was controversy about calls his opponent made. Various spectators of the match noticed that Gilberg’s opponent was not being consistent in making the correct calls about balls that were in play. Balls that were clearly in were allegedly called out. The result of the match was a 6-4, 7-6 loss.
Gilberg’s loss was of no factor for the outcome of the match. The Cougars continue to display solid play in the Bay Shore Athletic League and have the opportunity to be one of the top teams by season’s end. One obstacle the Cougars will face will be their next match against Piedmont. Piedmont has historically been dominant in BSAL tennis and will prove to be a real challenge.
