Cougars rally past Saints in opener

Nighttime in the Napa ValleyThe Cougar football team traveled to the Napa Valley on September 7 to face the St. Helena Saints under Friday Night Lights in a non-league match-up. After three months of intense spring training and an entire summer vacation of hard work, the Cougars wanted to show their desire and confidence in their 07-08 football season opener.

The Cougars did not disappoint, winning convincingly, 26-7.

Things started quickly for the Cougars. After stopping the Saints on their opening possession, the Cougars got the ball back and things began to click instantly. Senior quarterback Daniel Singh connected with his veteran senior wide receiver, Phillip Peterson on a thirty-yard grab over two Saint defenders. In a matter of seconds, the Cougars were on the board with a one-yard touchdown run by Adrian Webb.

The Cougars received lots of momentum going into the locker room as the Saints kicker missed a 25-yard field goal wide right. At the end of the first half, the score was tied 7-7.

To start the second half, the Cougars capped off a 90-yard drive with a touchdown pass from Singh to junior Clifton Brown on a 15-yard hook up in the right corner of the end zone.

The Cougars began to pull away as junior Omari Parker walked in for a 10-yard touchdown in “Reggie Bush” fashion to make it 19-7.
As the fourth quarter wound down, the Saints had one more opportunity to score. They decided to go in the air, but it was a definitely a mistake as junior linebacker Delroy Russell made a spectacular interception to seal the game for the Cougars.

But things weren’t over for the Cougar offense, as Phillip Peterson finished off the night with a beautiful 20-yard touchdown grab over a Saint defender, making the final score 26-7.
