Cougars prove too much for Panthers
After dropping four straight games, the Albany High Cougars baseball team looks back on track.
Following Wednesday’s pivotal victory over Piedmont at Cal’s Evans Diamond, the Cougars defeated cross-town rival St. Mary’s 15-13 on Thursday, May 1.
The Cougars picked up four runs in the first inning against the Panthers as senior Kyle Shipley led the charge with a two-run opposite field home run over the right field fence.
Sophomore Ellis Stephney started on the mound for the Cougars and gave up 12 runs, 9 earned, over 6 plus innings.
Shipley hit another home run leading off the top of the third inning to make the score 7-0, and the Cougars added six more runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth inning to push their total to 15.
However, St. Mary’s made a steady comeback, capped off with a six-run seventh inning to bring the game to within two. Senior Josh Spence came entered the game for Stephney in the seventh inning and managed to thwart the St. Mary’s comeback allowing only one unearned run to cross the plate and picking up a strike-out to end the game with the tying run on first base.
Shipley, senior Jake Phillips, and junior Jonathan Hicks each had three RBIs for the Cougars.
The Cougars play their first game of the year on Cougar Field next Wednesday, May 7 against St. Patrick/St. Vincent.
