Cougars lose to Mustangs at “home”
After starting off with a respectable record of 2-1 on the road with trips to Napa Valley, Fremont, and Watsonville, the Cougar football team was looking forward to hosting the St. Elizabeth Mustangs in their one and only “home” game at St. Mary’s. The Cougars were pumped up for their final non-league game after their close loss to Monte Vista Christian.
Unfortunately, the Cougars suffered their second straight loss of the season, 26-14.
The Cougars started the game off with an impressive opening drive, capped off as junior Clifton Brown caught a 12-yard pass down to the 1-yard line. On the next play, the Cougars were quickly on the scoreboard with a 1-yard run from junior running back Adrian Webb. Surprisingly, the Cougars added on two extra points on an unusual play scored by senior offensive lineman Matt Malanche on a full back dive play.
From that point on, the Cougars became sloppy and gave up two scores and trailed 14-8 in the middle of the second quarter. As the clock wound down in the first half, the Cougars got in one more score on a 1-yard run from junior Omari Parker to tie the game up at 14-14.
The game didn’t get any better as the Cougars were dominated in the second half.
In the middle of the third quarter, the Cougars were in the red zone and almost scored as senior Phillip Peterson caught a slant pass over the middle, but fumbled the ball as three Mustang defenders hit him. Peterson suffered a minor concussion. St. Elizabeth recovered the ball, but the referee’s call was questionable.
The Cougar defense gave up one key touchdown in the fourth quarter, where the Mustangs ran the same running play repeatedly to burn out the clock.
Senior quarterback Daniel Singh went 3 for 7 with 39 yards, no touchdowns and one interception.
Junior Adrian Webb ran for 58 yards in 10 carries; junior Omari Parker 36 yards in 7 carries, and each had one rushing touchdown.
Junior Clifton Brown had one reception for 16 yards; senior Phillip Peterson had a reception for 12 yards and senior tight end Alex Assia had a catch for 11 yards.
The Cougars have an even record at 2-2 and will be facing the beginning of league competition against Moreau Catholic in Hayward. Many people should come support the Cougars in their next game under the Friday night lights.
