Cougars In a Can

Classrooms are packed wall-to wall with desks. Halls are so crowded that the five minutes of passing period barely suffice to avoid being marked tardy. Indeed, it seems everyone in the Albany High School community is feeling the effects of increased enrollment.

On Friday, August 28th, there were 1,297 students actually at school. Taking absences into account, the number of students on campus is expected to increase. The projected enrollment is roughly 1,300. Last year, enrollment was lower. At the end of August, there were 1,269 students at school, and that number increased to 1,286 students by mid-September. However, about 50 additional students come to attend Albany High School later that year. This can be expected again this year, meaning that enrollment in June is likely to be higher than 1,300 students.

In light of the issues increased enrollment presents, Principal Ted Barone is meeting with Superintendent Marla Stephenson to discuss what steps to take to ameliorate the situation. There will another section that is opening with SchoolCARE money, though at this time it is undecided what that class will be. In the meantime, enrollment remains a serious concern. Teachers have been asked to notify the administration if they overhear students talking about suspicious Albany addresses or attending the school illegally.
