Cougars homecoming spoiled in 54-32 loss
The Albany Cougars took on the St. Patrick-St. Vincent Bruins at Homecoming last Friday, October 27. The Cougars hoped to be victorious in their homecoming game and inspire school unity after a week of class rivalry. A sea of red and white covered the bleachers as current students and old graduates came together to cheer on their team.
Things didn’t look good at the start. Less than two minutes into the game the Bruins held a 12-0 lead after returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown, recovering an onside kick, and scoring on a long run.
The Cougars answered with two scores of their own, sparked by a long kick return by Eric Roberson, and got the crowd excited and hopeful as they knotted the game up at 12. The Bruins answered with more points, but the Cougars held pace until halftime, trailing by 14 points.
Coming out for the second half, the Bruins were fired up and the Cougars were unable to keep up. Miscues resulted in easy points, and by the end of the game the score was Bruins 54, Cougars 32.
The game may have been a lot closer if the Cougars had played better on special teams. They surrendered two punt returns for touchdowns as well as another touchdown on a kickoff return. They also allowed the Bruins to recover two onside kicks.
The Cougars look to try and get a big win on the road as they take on St. Mary’s on November 4 and finish the season strong against Kennedy the following week in Richmond.
