Cougars crushed 40-7 at Piedmont

Junior Mike Gaunt looks on in dismayThe Albany High football team traveled to Piedmont High School on October 12 to take on the Highlanders in a key BSAL league game. The Cougars looked to get back on track against Piedmont following losses in their previous three games, but instead were crushed 40-7.

Things started off badly for Albany, as senior quarterback Daniel Singh threw an interception on the Cougars’ opening drive. Piedmont took the ensuing possession in for a touchdown and Albany was quickly in a 7-0 hole. Things didn’t get any better for the Cougars as Singh continued to struggle and was replaced in the second quarter by sophomore Andrew Spivey. Spivey didn’t fair any better, and Albany went into the half down 20-0.

The defense came out inspired in the second half and played aggressively, but the offense was still unable to get anything going and the Cougars consistently gave Piedmont good field position. Albany’s sole touchdown in the fourth came on a fumble recovered in the endzone.

This was not a strong showing from an Albany team that started the year 2-0 and has dropped the last four games in a row. However, this is the only game in which the Cougars have not been competitive and we will see if they are able to put it behind them and come out and get a victory next Friday at St. Patrick - St. Vincent.
