Cougars Claw Back Twice, Take SPSV for BSAL Lead
Despite spotting the visiting St. Patrick’s St. Vincent’s (SPSV) Bruins to two leads, the Albany High School Varsity Softball team prevailed on Friday April 3rd winning 4-3 in eight exciting innings. The win brings the Cougars to 9-0 in BSAL play (11-2 overall) and in sole possession of first place.
The Cougars overcame a 3-2 deficit in the 8th on a two-run, two-out hit by lone senior Hannah Kramer, scoring junior Maddie Cousens, who walked, and sophomore Ellie Arkin who drove Cousens to third with a line drive double up the middle.
Junior Sara Muse pitched all 8 innings, gave up five hits, one earned run, and fanned seven Bruin hitters.
The Cougars out hit SPSV, pounding out 12 hits in their offensive explosion compared to five for SPSV.
The Cougars were down 2-0 going into the bottom of the 5th inning, and then cut the deficit in half with a few keys hits and fielder’s choice plays and an RBI single by junior Sabina Khan. Khan was two for four with one RBI.
A line-drive single by junior Krista Smithers tied the game in the bottom of the 6th inning.
SPSV Scored one run in the top of the 8th inning, to bring the score to 3-2, only to be erased with Kramer’s game-winning hit. On the afternoon, Kramer went two for four in addition to the game winning RBIs.
Sophomore Ellie Arkin made the defensive play of the afternoon – a fabulous catch of a long fly ball to left field that snuffed out an SPSV scoring opportunity. Arkin was two for four at the plate and scored one run.
Junior Maddie Cousens was one for three with two runs and two walks;
junior Katie Carter was two for four with one run and three stolen bases
In the five previous contests between Albany and SPSV, Albany has won four games. Hopefully, win number six will come in May when the Cougars travel to SPSV to close out the season.
