Cougars’ season ends after blowout loss
The Albany High men’s basketball team did not envision its season ending this way.
The Cougars were destroyed Tuesday night against a hot St. Joseph Notre Dame team, 75-41. Though the Cougars defeated St. Joe’s at home earlier in the season, they dropped their most recent game against the Pilots on February 1 by 14 points, possibly a sign of what was to come on Tuesday night.
Albany trailed only 13-11 following the first quarter, but was outscored 25-7 in the second quarter, culminating in an insurmountable 38-18 halftime deficit and making a road victory in the first round of the Bay Shore Athletic League playoffs virtually impossible.
St. Joe’s exploited Albany’s zone defense by knocking down three-pointer after three-pointer, and the Cougars were unable to answer the shooting of the Pilots. St. Joe’s zone prevented Albany from getting any easy lay-ups, and the Cougars could not get it done from the perimeter.
Due to injuries, the Cougars’ bench was extremely thin, and players were forced to play extended minutes.
Albany needed to make a miracle run in the BSAL playoffs to try and earn a North Coast Section tournament birth, but the Cougars fell far short. After last year’s upset victory in the first round of the NCS tournament and a 16-11 overall record, this year’s 12-15 overall record and NCS playoff absence is a disappointment to players and Cougar supporters alike.
