Cougar Basketball Season Preview
Basketball season is right around the corner, and this season looks to be promising. The team will have all last year’s starters returning and a bench with a ton of depth. One of the starters, senior Kevin Karera, has a good chance to make first team all league.
Another reason this year will be interesting is that head coach Doug Kagawa has announced this will be his final year coaching basketball. Kagawa has coached high school basketball for 34 years.
The team will look to improve last year’s 10-16 records that included a first round loss to St. Joe’s in the playoffs. There will be a few players getting increased minutes and ready to make a difference. Many players, including juniors Ilari Rydberg and Alex Assia, could step up and have good years.
Rydberg has high hopes for the year. He stated, “We will make a run for the league championship and go to NCS.”
Assia who will see action in the frontcourt said, “I think our team is going to have a break out season. We have quickness, skills and determination to beat any team out there. This is coach Kagawa’s last year and we want him to leave with a good taste in his mouth, a BSAL championship. We are going to bring it to him!”
So the team has high hopes, but how will the players actually do? We will have to wait and see. In their first two exhibition games against Head Royce and Alameda, the Cougars were victorious, looking dominant at times.
In the Foundation game against DeAnza, the Cougars rallied to come out on top 49-44, without Karera. The Cougars opened up their season winning the consolation championship in the Salesian Tournament, with victories against Lincoln and San Marin high. The first league game on January 2, 2007 is against St. Patrick’s-St. Vincent.
Stay tuned for updates throughout the season.
