Cougar Baseball drops to 10-6

On April 14th, the St. Mary’s Panthers squared off against the 10 and 6 Albany High Cougars in a rematch of last year’s NCS baseball semifinals, which the Cougars won on their way to an eventual NCS championship appearance.

However the result of this game would be quite a bit different. St. Mary’s came out the gate scoring in the first inning off an errant throw on a double play attempt. The Cougars bounced back in the bottom of the first with a RBI double by sophomore Ellis Stephney off St. Mary’s star flame flower Matt Flemer, whose fastball tops out at 93 mph.

After that St. Mary’s loaded offensive lineup began to get its gears turning with one run in the second and four in the third.

Senior southpaw Josh Spence came in relief and pitched four innings of solid baseball giving up only two earned runs.

After the first inning Flemer settled down throwing five consecutive shut out innings recording his sixth win of the season.

Albany mounted a comeback in the sixth inning scoring two runs, one on a RBI single by junior Nana Yiadom but at this point the game was already out of reach.

Flemer once again got out of the inning without to much damage and finished the complete game giving up only five hits. The final score was 9-3.

The Cougars will get a chance for revenge on May 2nd when the travel across town to St. Mary’s for the final meeting of the year in this hotly contested rivalry.
