Career Day: A glimpse at the future
As always, this year’s Career Day provided students with valuable information about various career paths. Often times, the quality of the presentation directly correlates with how much the presenter likes their work. The approval rating of the speakers usually fluctuates, depending on what individual students expect from the presentation. But nearly every year, some presenters are universally loathed. As junior Amaya Fernandez explained, “When we go to these things, we expect to learn something about the career they’re in.”
Occasionally though, speakers can go on tangents and not say a single word about their professions. This problem occurred with the restaurateur this year. According to the accounts of several students, the man acted more as a “preacher,” talking about life in general and telling about how to overcome struggles.
Although this sort of speech would have been highly appreciated at a drug and alcohol rehab clinic, many students who wanted to learn how to own a restaurant were highly disappointed. For the most part though, this year’s Career Day was another success for students and the organizers alike.
Returning students are always pleased to see their old favorites on the selection sheet, like the FBI representative and the Police officer. Ms. Burns and the other Career Day organizers love to see students learn from different professionals talk about their careers. For many students, the day is simply a lesser of two evils, from the average school day, but what Ms. Burns and other teachers hope the students get from the day is knowledge that could potentially change their plans for careers and life for the better.

Career day was not good. I think this article is trying to be too nice. Some of the people didn’t even show up. The only one worth listening to was the restaurateur; he actually had advice about a career and engaged the students instead of putting them to sleep.
