Baseball wins the first NCS play-off game
On Tuesday May 20 the Albany baseball team began play in the postseason with a 1-0 victory over Las Lomas in the first round of the NCS tournament. Its was the third time Albany beat Las Lomas this year, as the Cougars won 9-1 and 4-3 in their previous meetings.
Albany was victorious due to great pitching by Kyle Shipley. While many scouts were there watching Las Lomas pitcher Dave Peterson, Shipley took control and out-pitched Peterson. For the second time this month, Shipley pitched a complete game shutout. He allowed only one hit and struck out 12.
Offensively, Albany was pretty quiet collecting only five hits in a game that went very fast due to the good pitching by both teams. Shipley had Albany’s only RBI.
With the win, Albany moves on to face the one seed in the bracket, Northgate High a team that beat Albany in the NCS semifinals two years ago.
After the game Shipley said, “I’m really excited to play Northgate, even though they’re the one seed there’s no team that I would rather play because of my own personal blunders in the game two years ago.”
Northgate is 22-2 on the year and has won 13 games in a row. They have not lost since April 1st. The game is scheduled for Friday at 5 in Walnut Creek.
