Albany wins 2-1 vs. St. Mary’s
The Albany varsity mens soccer team had an exciting win against St. Mary’s on Saturday, January 19. This was a particularly impressive achievement because the team was missing two of its key players, senior Nicky MacIntyre, and sophomore Peeja Khorashadi. St. Mary’s almost took the lead in the first half, but the goal was nullified due to an off-side call.
In the final seconds of the first half Albany’s senior forward Allam Chiu scored with an assist from senior Jay Healy.
The second half was equally enthralling. St. Mary’s capitalized on a free kick, tying the score with Albany. Luckily, Albany stepped up their game by scoring in the final five minutes of the game with a goal by sophomore defensive midfield player Juliano Pereira. The goal sealed a 2-1 win for Albany.
Albany has had a good season so far with 7 wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie, putting them in second place in the BSAL.
Albany has struck gold by finding a competent goalie, freshman Michael Sandberg. They were worried at the beginning of the season that they would have no one to play the position. The next game is on Saturday January 23, against St. Patrick’s, St. Vincent’s in Vallejo.
