Albany falls to defending league champs

On Friday, January 11, the Albany Cougar mens basketball team lost to Salesian by a final score of 54 to 45.

The score is not entirely indicative of the way the game was played. Although Albany came out slow and were outscored 18-5 in the first quarter, the Cougars fought hard to come back for the rest of the game. At one point late in the fourth quarter, Albany pulled within 4 points. Despite their strong effort, Albany couldn’t complete the comeback, as the Pride showed why they hold the BSAL crown.

Albany, coming off a three-game win streak that included impressive wins against St. Joe’s and Piedmont, was optimistic heading into the game. But despite the comeback, they were plagued by crucial turnovers and missed shots, which held them back from pulling a monumental upset.

The Cougars remain optimistic ever since Coach Kajiwara instituted a new lineup, inserting junior Jordan Johnson at guard and moving senior Ilari Rydberg to the power forward position. With 8 games remaining in league and a spot in the North Coast Section playoffs on the line, Albany is entering a crucial stretch.

The next home game is against the 15-2 Kennedy Eagles on Friday, January 18.
