Albany defeats Oakland High
On March 12th, The Albany High baseball team gave fans many reasons to be excited for the season, with an 8-1 victory over Oakland High. The Cougars won with an all- around balanced attack providing great pitching and hitting.
David Teel got it going earlier for Albany, with a home run in the bottom of the first to make it 1- 0. Teel, who is replacing last year’s catcher Junna Murakawa, gave Albany early momentum which they never lost. Ellis Stephney also homered for the Cougars and went 2-2 at the plate.
Albany was very impressive on the mound as well. Kyle Shipley tossed the first four innings giving up no earned runs while striking out seven. Emerson Roberts-Donnelly pitched the final three innings, shutting Oakland High down while striking out four. All together, Shipley and Roberts-Donnelly combined to give up only two hits and no earned runs. Oakland High’s lone run came in the top of the second and it was not an earned run.
The victory improved the Cougars to 5-0 and this was their first home game of the season at the brand new field. Albany fans got to see a few new faces playing for the Cougars. Fourteen different players got at bats for the Cougars and got some experience that should be key down the road.
Albany has another home game this Friday the 14th, against St. Joseph Notre Dame. St. Joes is also undefeated so far and this looks to be a good match up of Bay Shore League teams.
