AHS Volleyball: Preview
The Albany High School volleyball team begins this season with high hopes and an impressive history. Last season they shared the BSAL title with Piedmont. They also competed in NCS, where they lost in the second round to Analy of Sebastapol.
Coach Sarah McClendon explained, “You can see our volleyball banners all over the wall in the gym.”
The team is looking at many additions for the upcoming season. Always known for their solid defense, the team looks forward to adding a lot of height this year, with two girls six feet or taller joining the team: freshmen Marin Gibson and Kyra Holt.
While McClendon looks forward to the “depth and talent” of this years’ team, she singles out sophomore McKenzie Giblin as a setter, senior Emma Jackson as a right side, freshman Kyra Holt as an outside hitter, junior Sita Wong on defense, and senior Talei Tagivakatini in the middle.
The prospects for the upcoming season are looking very positive. At press time, the Cougar’s record is 6-2 overall (3-0 BSAL).
McClendon noted, “The team is very cohesive. We are a family during the season always looking out for one another on and off the court. I predict that this team will be very successful in league. I would like to win the BSAL championship outright and go deep in NCS. My goal is always to get to state, but we have a lot of work to do between now and then.”
There is also a strong JV volleyball team this year, with a new coach, Lynn Hall, who has a lot of coaching experience and played Division 1 volleyball. McClendon is confident that “there is a lot of potential building on the JV team to improve and make an impact on the varsity team when it is their time to try out next year.”
Coach McClendon concludes, “These girls are here to play, and play hard. Come to a game and see what great volleyball looks like!”

Freshman Marin Gibson anticipates a pivotal return
