AHS Mathletes score another win

Sophomore George Shan solves team problem #1On Wednesday, December 20, the Albany High School mathletes traveled to Oakland Technical High School to win their third consecutive meet this year. AHS team “Delta is an element of the set {x, y}” won the meet with 27 points, followed by Oakland High School with 20 points. Bishop O’Dowd High School, with 18 points, got third place. Albany’s second team, “1+1=3,” tied with Oakland Tech, scoring 14 points. Surprisingly, two remaining AHS students formed another team and scored 7 points, almost beating Oakland Tech’s second team composed of five students.

The winning team, composed of Cathy Wu, Ian Allen, George Shan, Elise Cai, and myself, started off badly, only retaining a one point lead over Oakland High School for the first five rounds. But in the last two rounds, each team member answered every question correctly, widening the lead. Victory was secure by the time the team correctly answered all three team questions correctly, for five more points.

This marks Albany’s third win this year, after winning every meet during the 2005-2006 year. However, due to the fact that many schools (including longtime rival Piedmont High School) had already started winter break, there were only four schools present at the meet, possibly indicating a substandard level of competition. Does a true challenge lie ahead for the Math Club? We’ll have to wait and see.
