AHS Mathletes destroy competition at home meet
The final East Bay Mathletes competition was held on May 16, 2007 at the Albany High multi-purpose room. Albany teams took the top two places, ended the year nearly undefeated. It was four graduating seniors’ last meet.
Because it was a home meet, several of Albany’s teams attended, and two former AHS students (who are now freshmen at UC Berkeley), Bing Xia and Zi Wang, were present to help grade questions.
The questions, selected by the AHS Math Department, were highly unconventional, with one involving graphing, a multiplication problem that needed to be filled out algebraically, and one team problem involved arranging tangrams.
Albany’s three teams all placed highly, with the first two earning first and second place. Albany’s third team, despite having only four out of five members, tied Bishop O’Dowd for third place.
The final scores are as follows (out of a total possible 40 points):
| Delta is an element of the set {x,y} [Albany High School] | 26 points |
| Freshmen Domination with Bing [Albany High School] | 13 points |
| Hello Kitty [Albany High School] | 10 points |
| Bishop O’Dowd | 10 points |
| Piedmont High School | 9 points |
| Oakland High School 1 | 2 points |
| Oakland High School 2 | 1 point |
