AHS Concert Band Receives Unanimous Superior

On Saturday, May 3, 2008, the AHS Concert Band made Albany music program history when it achieved for the first time the coveted rating of Unanimous Superior (also known as Command Performance) at the CMEA Band and Orchestra Festival at East Avenue Middle School in Livermore.

At this festival, music groups perform selections in front of three judges who rate them accordingly. There is also a sight-reading clinic, in which the band must choose, discuss, and perform a piece that they have never seen before.

This was the first year for Instrumental Music director Craig Bryant, who said, “I was just very proud of the students.” For the future of the music program, Bryant believes “Once you get there one time you can do it again.”

For the seniors in Concert Band, the Unanimous Superior came as a nice way to wrap up their final year in AHS bands, having been taught by three different band directors over the course of four years.

AHS Symphonic Band and String Orchestra also attended the festival, earning an Excellent and a Superior rating respectively.

Congratulations to all of the groups for their great performances. There is one more chance to see these ensembles in concert on Monday, May 19 at 7:00 p.m. in the Little Theater.
