AHS Cheerleaders Win Second Place at Regional Competition
On Sunday, October 14, the Albany High School combined JV and Varsity cheer team won second place trophies in the Varsity Show Cheer and Hip Hop divisions at their first regional competition. The California Bay Championship, which the team had been practicing for since the beginning of the school year, was hosted at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom by JAMZ Cheer & Dance.
Although the girls had been hoping to bring home first place, they qualified to compete in Varsity Show Cheer against teams from all over the country in this coming February’s JAMZ National Championships at California Adventures in Anaheim.
“Honestly, I think it could have gone a lot better,” said varsity sophomore Erica Luo, “The good part was that we had high jumpers and people who actually wanted to cheer and get first place…the bad part, others didn’t, or they did but didn’t do much to make that happen.”
Varsity members agree that if they “work hard and don’t waste time,” they will improve on their performances at future competitions and hopefully win first place.
The cheerleaders are currently working on routines and stunts that they will perform at the Homecoming Rally and varsity halftime show, as well as at a USA (United Spirit Association) Regional Competition on November 18 at Sonoma State University.
Now that the team has experienced the high school level competition scene, the cheerleaders are pumped for their next performances. “We better bring it!” said Luo enthusiastically.

These girls have worked very hard this year and DESERVE some respect from their fellow students, teachers and administration. Why don’t you give them some support instead of talking mess about them. Are you representing your school in any way? They are!

Why are people so negative about the cheerleaders!? Is it out of jealousy or ignorance. The cheerleaders have been working hard since May of last school year. They are trying to gain the respect of their fellow students, teachers and administration and don’t need any negative comments. Show a little respect!!!!
