Afghanistan Unveiled
On December 12th the AHS Amnesty International Club will be hosting a documentary movie screening and guest speaker presentation to raise awareness about women’s rights and repression in the Afghanistan.
The film, Afghanistan Unveiled, is a powerful documentary depicting the journey of a group of female journalists as they travel to Afghanistan and witness the devastating oppression of the women in society based on a sexually biased government structure. A voluntary group discussion will follow. The featured guest speaker, Elsie Delaere, will supplement the event with a presentation describing her endeavors training potential teachers for developing schools in Afghanistan.
AHS Amnesty International co-presidents Eline Leemans and Lucia Sekoff said, “This movie and presentation will reveal how Afghanistan is oppressive and how women are deprived of their deserved rights such as education and freedom of speech. The U.S. military is deeply involved in Afghanistan, yet as a society we are so removed from the problem. The Amnesty International club believes that it’s important to expand our knowledge of other countries and to understand what other people are forced to endure on a daily basis. We really encourage people to come!”
The catered event will be held in the AHS library from 7:00 to 9:00 pm on Friday December 12th. A $5 donation is requested, and the proceeds will benefit the Amnesty International club and provide funding for Delaere’s further work in Afghanistan.
