“Math-acre” at Fremont High School
On Wednesday, January 17, 2007, the AHS Mathlete team (named ∫∈{x, y}) went to Fremont High School (located in Oakland) in an attempt to out-think other local East Bay Schools. Even though Albany usually wins these meets, the ensuing mathematical carnage was more than anyone could have expected.
This was the first time that Fremont High had hosted a meet since 1993, so in observance of the occasion, the questions were from a 1992 meet at FHS. These questions however, proved to be ridiculously easy for the AHS team.
Most of the questions dealt with basic algebra and geometry; the third question, concerning the angle formed by two hands of a clock, was almost identical to one used at a recent practice. Needless to say, individual scores were very high. The majority of the team scored six points each, and one talented mathlete (who wishes to remain anonymous) even scored a perfect seven. Usually, individual scores for the varsity team are between three and five.
By the time team questions (pictured) were distributed, it was clear who was winning. AHS had a 14-point lead over their nearest competitors, Bishop O’Dowd High School (who had borrowed an AHS mathlete to fill their team). The team questions were just as easy as the individual ones, and AHS ended the meet with 35 points, their highest score this year.
While munching on the complimentary cookies, the team discussed future challenges after this particularly easy match. The next meet will be held in one month.
